A Sister's Perspective

Dear Dr. Macy:

I want to take a moment and let you know how happy I am with my sister's placement. The staff is wonderful, Evie's needs are always addressed, and any concerns that arise, are quickly handled.

The house manager, Joanne Schroff, is particularly supportive. My sister had dental issues that did not have an easy solution. Joanne doggedly pursued the issue, found the appropriate care, and kept me informed of the situation.

Importantly, I am always kept up to date about Evie's care with notes or phone calls from Joanne. I strongly feel Joanne and I work together as a team to create the best life we can for Evie.

Additionally, I want to comment about the assistant manager, Robin, and the house staff. The staff at the house is always welcoming, accommodating, and helpful. They take the time to chat with me at each visit and I feel like a member of the family at the house.

The meals that Evie enjoys are nutritious, home-cooked, and delicious. Robin's homemade soup is especially well-received. It smells so good on a cold winter day.

I am so grateful that Evie is in this house with a wonderful house staff, and support staff from SARAH and DDS. Each person is a valuable team member that creates the best life possible for my sister.

Significantly, the other residents of the house love Evie. Evie finds the environment warm and loving. This means everything to me. Evie is happy.

In essence, Evie's medical, physical and emotional needs are being met. Thank you. I could not ask for anything more.

Sincerely,

Jan Doyle

Edith's Family

Mr. Macy,

We are writing to you on behalf of our sister Edith. Iona Gervasi and Betty Musler are Edith's sisters and legal guardians.

Edith has had one on one staff for some time now. We would like you to know how much this has improved Edith's quality of life.
We have had the pleasure on many occasions to witness the special relationship between Tammy Bednarik and Edith.

As Edith's sisters we know that she is not the easiest person at times. Tammy always finds a way around her moods. We feel blessed to have Tammy as Edith's one on one. Tammy is the most caring, loving, easy going, person yet, she has the knack and wisdom to care for Edith with ease. To see the two of them interact with each other is a beautiful thing. Tammy is an asset to your organization.

We would also like you to know that we feel the Manager and staff at Long Hill Road are exceptional. There is no other place we would want our sister to be. They are truly family there.

Sincerely,

Betty Musler
Iona Gervasi

A Brother's Perspective...the early years

Family Stories

Tom spent the first 25 years of his life in an institution. At the time, that was the best our parents could do. It was a real blessing for us all (especially for Tom) when he was accepted into one of SARAH's group homes. He stayed at Long Hill Road. He lived there with 4 housemates, some of whom are still his friends.

To have a home like that, and the care that went along with it, and a good job (where he started to come out of his "institutional shell" and take on more responsibility) changed Tom's life.

We are all grateful for what the people at SARAH have done for Tom.

Editor's Note: Tom currently lives in a site with one housemate and a live in staff. We look forward to more updates from Tom's brother, Mark.
