As the SARAH Board of Directors were considering how best to re-organize the agency back in the late 1980's they realized that residential services are more complex than day services operating 24 hours 7 days a week. Believing that the future would bring only more growth in these services the Board felt it was imperative to start with 2 agencies and thereby plan for reasoned expansion.
SARAH Tuxis moved quickly in the early 1990's to take advantage of innovations in the Connecticut Medicaid Waiver system and began developing innovative individualized supports. Moving beyond traditional group living options, SARAH Tuxis began exploring how best to provide in home supports and services that were not classified as either "day or residential". The agency thus began a process that continues almost 2 decades later starting with the individual and building creative supports "one person at a time".
People supported by the agency are funded through the Connecticut Department of Developmental Services, (DDS). To be able to receive SARAH Tuxis supports requires a determination of eligbility of services through DDS. To find out more about DDS Eligibility please go to their website at:

The names SARAH Seneca & SARAH Tuxis came from the names of Connecticut Indian Tribes. In our case, Tuxis, was the name of a local shoreline tribe that actually lived in the current towns of Madison - Guilford area. There is a small island off of the Madison shoreline known as Tuxis Island. The Tuxis name is frequently confused by Connecticut residents with Tunxis. The latter is the name of another native Indian tribe that lived in the Farmington/Avon area (central CT. area)
