Awarded the Arc US, Boggs/Mitchell Award

The agency was given this prestigious award in recognition of its work in building inclusive recreation opportunities for the persons it serves through it's innovative Unified Arts initiative.  The award is given annually by the Arc US to recognize "a chapter of The Arc that provides a year round challenging recreational program for people with mental retardation in activities that include non-disabled participants as well."  The award is named in memory of two long time proponents of recreational opportunities Fitzhugh W. Boggs and Charles T. Mitchell.

Receiving the award was a great honor but it brought with it a significant responsibility.  The selection criteria for the award required an aggressive partnership between the agencies supporting persons with disabilities and their larger communities.  While SARAH Tuxis and the arts community of the Connecticut shoreline have begun a noteworthy project, we have a significant challenge before us. We must continue to create a wider variety of opportunities for persons with disabilities to be included in their communities as valued citizens. Return to Tuxis home page
