Reaching out and giving back...
Pat fulfilled her long time desire to volunteer for the local cat shelter, "Forgotten Felines", and is now a foster mother! Last summer, Pat received her first kitten, "Minnow". Minnow was a five month old kitten that was abandoned in Guilford. He was malnourished and frail. Pat's job as a foster mother was to socialize Minnow and prepare him for permanent adoption. Minnow stayed with Pat for four months and was recently adopted into a loving home, Pat did a tremendous job with fostering and looks forward to doing it again!

As much as Pat benefits from her various social and volunteer activities, it is the support and friendship she receives from and extends to her roommate, Mindy, that is her strongest connection. Mindy helps Pat with household tasks, comforts her when she calls out for support in the evening and she is Pat's dedicated hair stylist! Pat values her friendship with Mindy. She waits up for Mindy to return at night and loves sharing stories with her about her day. A unique living situation that began as a solution to a problem for both women has ended in a wonderful friendship!

Editor's Comment:
Pat advocated stridently for herself some years ago. She did not want to live in a group home any longer. She wanted to live on her own but still needed assistance to do so. SARAH Tuxis staff worked with her over the years and ultimately created her current living situation where her roommate, who does not have a disability, shares the apartment and they each share their life. Pat's experience is representative of many people the agency supports....creating individual supports ....one person at a time!
