Board of Directors
Colleen Smith has made community involvement an important part of her life since moving to Madison, CT in 1977. She started by volunteering with the American Red Cross Blood Drive Committee and on the fundraising team for Our Lady of Mercy School before being invited to join the SARAH Tuxis Board of Directors in 1991. She served as the SARAH Tuxis representative to the Development Committee (the precursor of the SARAH Foundation) and worked on fundraising activities as well as helped establish the formula for fund disbursement. Colleen previously proudly served as President from 1998-2001. Aside from her extensive community achievements, Colleen also has a BA degree in Elementary Education and an MA in Elementary Developmental Reading. Colleen lives in Madison with her husband Ed. They have two sons, Kevin and Edward. Edward participates in the Sarah Tuxis day program at the Tuxis Harbor in Westbrook. Colleen has a great feeling of pride and respect for what has been accomplished at SARAH Tuxis since it’s beginning in 1990.
Nancy Collins has been a Board Member for over 20 years. Nancy and her husband Richard live in North Branford with their son Robert. Robert is an amazing young man of 34 who happens to have Down Syndrome. Nancy first joined the Board after hearing, having first joined after hearing about the person-centered planning and people-first vision of SARAH Tuxis from current president Colleen Smith.
As a secretary for her entire working life, Nancy believes that her experience in supporting people is a good match for her service as a Board member. The Holiday Gift Project has long been one of her favorite activities. More recently, supporting the renovation of the new Tuxis Harbor facility in Westbrook has afforded the entire Collins family many opportunities to volunteer.
Nancy believes that one of the most gratifying benefits of serving on the Board of Directors is having the opportunity to meet and work with fellow Board members who are passionate and truly believe in the potential of every human being.
